A living place

Fountain of Battles is one of Granada's most emblematic monuments and the main meeting point in the city center. Located at C. Acera del Casino, 15, right in Puerta Real, this historic Baroque-style fountain represents the social and cultural pulse of Granada since the mid-20th century.

Architecture

Fountain of Battles in Granada stands out for its elegant Baroque style. Built in solid stone, it features robust pedestals that intertwine forming small mixtilinear arches. The sculptural ensemble is especially beautiful when illuminated at night, becoming one of Granada's most photographed monuments.

History of the Fountain of Battles

The history of the Fountain of Battles dates back several centuries. Although its exact origin is uncertain, it is believed to have belonged to the old Belén convent of the barefoot Mercedarian friars. Originally known as "Fuente de la Reina" (Queen's Fountain) according to historian Gómez Moreno, the fountain was moved to its current location between 1949 and 1950 during the term of Mayor Antonio Gallego Burín.

The name "Fountain of Battles" comes from the old esplanade where it was situated, an area outside the walls where military units—called "batallas"—would gather for inspection. This area has witnessed Granada's evolution from medieval times to the present day.
